What are logistics warehouses?

Logistics warehouses are facilities designed for the storage, management, and distribution of goods. Their primary function is to organize and optimize the flow of products within the supply chain. These spaces often handle large volumes of cargo and use heavy machinery, making them high-risk work environments.

Accident statistics in logistics warehouses

Workplace accidents are common in the logistics sector, often involving hazardous situations such as operating heavy machinery and moving goods.

According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), the transport and storage sector reports a significant number of accidents worldwide, including fatal ones. This highlights the importance of implementing preventive measures, especially in logistics warehouses.

In Europe, the logistics and transportation sector saw a 2.95% increase in accidents during the first half of 2024, with 21,926 incidents reported, including 66 fatalities.

Accidents in logistics warehouses in Spain

In Spain, according to the Ministry of Labor, there were 41,055 accidents in the transport and storage sector in 2023. Of these incidents, 410 were classified as serious, and 123 were fatal. Specifically, the "Storage and Supporting Activities for Transportation" sector, which focuses on logistics warehouses, reported 8,819 accidents.

The 3 most serious types of accidents in logistics warehouses

  1. Falls from heights: Falls are common when using elevated platforms or working on high shelves. The lack of proper protective equipment or safety measures can lead to severe injuries, such as fractures or head trauma.

  2. Machinery collisions: Forklifts and pallet jacks pose a constant danger in warehouses. Poor visibility or inadequate signage can result in collisions, leading to injuries, amputations, or even fatalities.

  3. Cargo collapses: Incorrect stacking of heavy loads can cause shelving units to collapse or items to fall, resulting in serious head and back injuries. These accidents are often due to improper storage practices.

How to prevent serious accidents in logistics warehouses

Preventing accidents in these environments is crucial. Some essential recommendations include:

  • Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Helmets, harnesses, and safety footwear should be mandatory, especially in high-risk areas.
  • Signage and area marking: Clearly marking machinery routes and loading/unloading zones helps prevent collisions.
  • Regular inspections: Periodic checks of shelving, machinery, and equipment reduce the risk of failures that could cause accidents.
  • Promoting a safety culture: Encouraging a preventive mindset at all organizational levels helps identify and mitigate risks before incidents occur.
  • Ongoing training: Workers should receive specific training on machinery handling and applicable safety regulations. Technologies like Virtual Reality (VR) are now used to provide realistic simulations where workers can face job-related risks.

Logistics warehouses play a vital role in the supply chain but also present complex and hazardous work environments. Implementing effective safety measures, training workers and promoting a preventive culture are essential to protecting workers' lives and health.
